Persephone
Persephone, daughter of the goddess Demeter.
Persephone, daughter of Demeter, goddess of the cultivation of the earth, became famous because of her abduction by Hades who made her his wife. The withering of her mother, and consequently the withering of the earth, forced Zeus to command Hades to set Persephone free to return to her mother. Hades, leaving Persephone, gave her a few pomegranate seeds to eat so that she would not forget him. As long as Persephone was with her mother, half the year, the other half she returned to Hades, the earth grew. During the rest of the withering period, the earth ceased to bear fruit.
