Hermes the messenger of the gods is found holding in his hands a caduceus, a symbol of peace and cessation of discord. Legend has it that once with his stick he separated two snakes that were fighting fiercely with each other. Since then the two snakes, together with his wings, decorated the stick. Ambassadors and preachers held a caduceus as a protective emblem against hostile actions to them.
